When to play
October through May is prime outdoor season. Late May to mid-October is the rainy season, which the National Weather Service says brings almost daily afternoon storms and frequent lightning, peaking from July to early September. In summer:
- Play early. Morning sessions beat both the heat and the afternoon storms.
- Get off the court at the first thunder. Lightning is the real hazard in Florida, not the rain.
- Have an indoor backup. Tampa Pickleball Crew in Ybor, the clubs in Largo, Pinellas Park and Oldsmar, and the covered courts at NorthLakes all keep you playing when a storm rolls in.
What to bring
- The right ball. Outdoor balls are harder with smaller holes and handle wind better. Indoor clubs often use indoor balls, so check before you go.
- Water and shade. Even in winter, midday sun on a hard court adds up.
- A paddle that fits your game. Not sure what to play with? Our paddle shape guide is a good start, or demo a few with a Royal Ambassador before you choose yours.
Frequently asked questions
Where can I play pickleball for free in Tampa?
Public parks are the place to start: Macfarlane Park, Julian B. Lane Riverfront Park and Cuscaden Park have the most courts. Hillsborough County's NorthLakes courts are covered and lit. Across the Bay, Eagle Scout Park in Dunedin has 10 lighted courts.
Is there indoor pickleball in Tampa?
Yes. Tampa Pickleball Crew has an indoor club in Ybor City, and the city runs indoor pickleball at several rec centers. Around the Bay, Pickleball Kingdom (Pinellas Park), Pickle & Pint and Dink House (Largo), Dill Dinkers (St. Pete) and Tampa Bay Pickleball (Oldsmar) are all indoors.
Do I need to reserve a court?
Not at most public parks, which run on open play with paddle rotation. Indoor clubs and some city rec centers use booking apps, so reserve ahead, especially for evenings and weekends.
When is the best time of year to play in Tampa?
October through May. Summer is playable early in the morning, but the rainy season brings almost daily afternoon storms, so have an indoor or covered backup.
